Lessons (Re)learned from Geotechnical Failures
Richard Finno, PE, PhD, DGE
In his Terzaghi Lecture entitled “Necessary Redundancy in Geotechnical Engineering,” Professor Osterberg discussed the causes of geotechnical engineering failures and presented eight cases to illustrate his points. In keeping with his legacy, this lecture presents several geotechnical failures. These case studies are related to earth retaining structures and foundations, two areas for which Professor Osterberg had a keen interest. These cases will illustrate failures related to both serviceability and stability issues.
