Working Platforms - A DFI Multi-Committee Topic: Concepts, Comments on Worldwide and US Approach, Examples and Consideration Going Forward
Matthew E. Meyer, P.E., D.GE and Martin G. Taube, P.E., PG

As many of the various DFI member firms are aware, a working platform provides stability for cranes and drilling equipment required to install deep foundation systems or ground improvement/modification systems. This topic is important to most if not all of the DFI committees and their respective specific system(s). A working group was formed some time ago predominantly consisting of committee members of the Ground Improvement committee. More recently discussions have been held amongst various DFI committee chairs and trustees regarding the Working Platform topic and its multi-committee nature. The intent of this presentation is to provide an introductory type presentation of the topic, some background on worldwide and US practices compiled via a brief survey of member firms, a few examples of working platforms (with some super/mega cranes supported on working platforms) and a forum for interested DFI members to continue the dialogue, volunteer and be cognizant of the importance of the working platform as it relates to drill rig and crane stability.
