Back Analysis and Performance of a Cantilever Portion of Excavation in Mixed Soil Profile

A 600mm thick diaphragm wall of more than 16m deep was built as a retaining structure to support 12m deep basement in mixed soil conditions. First level of anchor was installed at 6m and second level was proposed at 10m depth below the existing ground level. About 6.5m excavation was required to install the first level anchor, across the construction site. Intensive monitoring and attention was called for during initial period of excavation due to 6.5m unsupported excavation, to build confidence within the teams. Comprehensive instrumentation using inclinometers, piezometers and total station measurements was in place to observe the wall movements and to monitor ground water table. Deflection patterns of the cantilever portion of the excavated wall at selected locations within the premises is discussed in this paper. Back analysis of the wall deflections has been carried out using WALLAP and findings are presented in this paper.
