The Use of High Strength H Bearing Piles in Hong Kong

In order to check in practice the performance of high strength HISTAR bearing piles with a yield point up to 460 MPa, 6 driving tests were conducted at 6 different locations during March and April 89 in Hong Kong, renowned for its difficult and severe soil and driving conditions. After the successful completion of these preliminary tests, the HISTAR bearing piles have been accepted by the main Hong Kong Government Authorities and several projects have been performed up to date. This paper shows the results from dynamic measurements during driving and from load tests. The evaluation of all available data allows to state that the use of HISTAR piles not only results in foundation cost savings due to reduction of the pile weight but also that the present H-pile design as practiced in Hong Kong can be substantially improved, given appropriate soil conditions.
