In June 1990, after a construction period of approximately 1.5 years, the Deepwater Bulk Terminal, with a length of 1,500 m, was completed. With this terminal, the Port of Rotterdam can accommodate more vessels with draughts up to 24 m for the handling of coal and iron-ore. On behalf of the Rotterdam Port Authority, the Harbour Engineering Division of Rotterdam Public Works performed the design of the quay wall structure and supervised the construction activities. This article describes the design principles of the quay wall in relation to the soil conditions. Subsequently, the selection of the pile installation techniques used is presented. Finally, an evaluation of the actual installation operations is given.
