Optimal pile driving

To date optimization techniques for pile driving have been subjective and semi-empirical. This paper derives analytically the optimum parameters for piledriving, together with the limit constraints. The analysis of pile driving improved significantly with the introduction of the Hiley Formula (1930), the E.A.L. Smith lmped mass-spring model (1962) and the impedance model (1970). Industry trends over the same period may be broadly described as (a)increasing hammer energy input to drive longer diameter and longer piles and (b)competition causing perfection of hammer performance. The latter trend requires the application of optimization techniques and definition of the system constraints.
