Dynamic testing of H-piles and HDB sites

The paper describes a series of 35 dynamic pile tests conducted at various Housing and Development Board (HDB) sites in Singapore. 11 of these piles were loaded to ultimate failure in compression. A simple HDB model for the prediction of the settlements and penetration resistance is presented. The results of the HDB simple elastic-plastic (EP) pile-soil model compared very well with the results of pile statically loaded to ultimate failure. The results also compared well with CASE and CAPWAP. Hydraulic hammers were more efficient than the diesel hammers and the pile sets could be increased for hydraulic hammers to achieve the same penetration resistance. Rapid determination of the pile stiffness from the EP model during pile driving makes it possible to servo-control the driving of piles to achieve a uniform settlement for pile foundations of buildings.
