The Theory of the Expansion of Cavities Applied to Pile Installation
D.A. Ponniah; University of Edinburgh, UK R. McAnoy; Taywood Engineering Ltd., UK
The installation of a pile is considered analogous to the expansion of a cylindrical cavity of a diameter equal to that of the pile. Using Vesic's theory of the expansion of cavities the effect of soil properties on pile installation loads, radial pore and total pressures are evaluated. The theoretical results are compared with load and pressure measurements made in field trials in a stiff clayey glacial till in the U.K.
