The use of sheet-piling for the encapsulation of abandoned landfills
Prof Dr Ing H.L. Jessberger, Dr. Ing. M. Geil & G.H. Pursch
The use of sheet piling as load bearing and sealing construction elements in the field of waterway and harbour construction has been tested and proved successful for decades. Recently the sealing properties have been increasingly used, especially in landfill engineering and remediation of contaminated land. With this application, a sheet-pile wall may be used exclusively or as an additional sealing component in different water retaining systems. The impermeability of sealing wall system results from the permeability characteristics of the materials used (sealing wall material, sheet wall, and others), but especially from the systems of construction joints. The encapsulation of waste landfills and contaminated land moreover creates additional demands concernining the durability of the sealing materials used. The application of sheet-piling in sealing wall systems and the sealing effect obtained is described by some typical examples.
