Full Scale Loading Tests on Instrumented Piles

Insrumentation, experimental techniques and interpretation methods adopted in a number of full scale loading tests on foundation piles are first presented. Results on a variety of piles and subsoil situations, typical of Southern Italy, are then reported. They include large diameter bored piles in pyroclastic soils and in stiff clays; bored and driven cast-in-situ piles end bearing on volcanic tuff; auger piles in pyroclastic soils; tubular steel piles in soft clays. It is shown that the additional information provided by the instrumentation greatly increases the engineering value of load testing.
