Dangers of using geofabrics in cast-in-situ bored piles
S. S. Rao
The use of Geofabric membrane as liner around piles is of a fairly recent origin and not much is known or written about it. It has been used for cast-in-situ bored piles using temporary liners and could be used for piles constructed by bentonite mud circulation process for stabilising the bores. Claims have been made by manufacturers of geofabrics and indeed by some researchers about the efficacy of this geofabric liner resulting in a sound shaft of concrete, reduction in negeative skin friction, avoidance of contamination with injurious sulphates, chemicals, etc. This paper deals specifically with difficulties encountered while using this type of liner and describes the deficiencies noticed during construction in and around Bombay (India).
