This paper describes the geology of three European cities and outlines how the geology has lead to the development of specific foundation construction techniques. Comparative tables of techniques commonly employed are given. It can be seen that despite the presence of the "single market", techniques still have wide diversity despite some similarities in geotechnical conditions.
