Deep Soil Stabilization Using Lime Cement Columns
Melvin I. Esrig PhD PE, Edward P. Forte PE, Peter E. MacKenna

Lime Cement column stabilization of soft clay and sand in Salt Lake City, Utah and in San Francisco, California is described and discussed. Stabilization permitted the construction, in a single stage, of a 14 m MSE wall on "medium" clay in Salt Lake City. It was used to mitigate the potential for liquefaction in San Francisco and to stabilize the Young Bay Mud beneath the BART extension to San Francisco Airport. These applications are described and the field measurements of performance are reported.
